ADLER 2

ADLER 2 [ÖWF]

ADLER 2 (Austrian Debris Detection Low Earth (orbit) Reconnoiter) is an Austrian In-Orbit Demonstration of space debris detection from a 3U CubeSat using multiple sensors. It is developed by SPIRE and ÖWF (Östereichisches Weltraum Forum , Austrian Space Forum) in partnership with FINDUS Venture GmbH.

The ADLER-2 satellite is based on Spire Global's Lemur-2 6U-cubesat and features customized experiments instead of the standard Lemur payload.

The satellite carries three Instruments:

  • The Austrian Particle Impact Detector (APID-2) piezo-sensor developed by the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF), designed to detect debris particle impacts
  • A Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (GAPMAP), a wide field-of-view imaging instrument optimized for cubesat technology and designed for accurate and comprehensive measurements of microphysical properties of cloud water and ice particles in the atmosphere. These new observations and better understanding of cloud properties and aerosol processes in the atmosphere will help improve estimates around climate change patterns on Earth.
  • An enhanced version of an orbital debris tracking radar, operating a continuous-wave radar system for mm-sized particles.

ADLER 2 will be launched in April 2023 on a shared Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) rocket.
