Percheron

Percheron (G. Hudson)

Percheron, created by Space Services Inc. (SSI), was the first attempt to create a privately financed launch vehicle. It would have consisted of a cluster of basic, liquid fueled stages, topped by a small upper stage.

Only a single core module was constructed, but it exploded during tests on the launch pad at Matagorda Island, Texas, dooming the further development. Under pressure from NASA, SSI switched to the solid fueled Conestoga-1.
